Turning Potassium Stress into Crop Performance
How formulators can help growers protect yield and resilience with plant-derived nutrition
Modern growers are under increasing pressure to maintain crop performance despite nutrient-depleted soils, climate stress, and the demand for more sustainable agricultural practices. One of the most common hidden challenges affecting crop productivity is potassium deficiency.
Even when soils contain potassium reserves, only a limited fraction is actually available for plant uptake. Continuous cropping, drought conditions, salinity, and nutrient imbalances can quickly reduce plant-accessible potassium levels, leading to weaker growth, lower stress tolerance, and reduced yields.
For formulators of fertilizers and biostimulants, the challenge is clear: how can we deliver effective potassium nutrition while supporting sustainable and environmentally responsible agriculture?
The challenge: potassium stress reduces yield potential
Potassium plays a central role in plant physiology. It supports:
- Photosynthesis and energy transfer
- Water regulation and nutrient efficiency
- Enzyme activation and sugar transport
- Stronger cell structure and plant vigor
- Resistance to drought, salinity, cold, and disease pressure
When crops experience potassium stress, plants often show slower growth, weaker development, lower chlorophyll levels, and reduced fruit set. These effects directly impact productivity and profitability for growers.
In high-value crops such as tomatoes, potassium deficiency can significantly reduce the number of fruit clusters and overall fruit weight, especially during key reproductive stages.
A plant-derived solution for modern agriculture
To help formulators address these challenges, Roquette has developed SOLULYS® 145V, an Ecocert-certified, plant-derived ingredient designed for advanced fertilizer and biostimulant formulations.
Derived from soluble potato protein extracts, SOLULYS® 145V delivers a unique combination of:
- Plant-based potassium
- Organic nitrogen
- Water-soluble proteins
- Free amino acids such as asparagine
- Organic acids including citrate and lactate
- Secondary nutrients such as sulfur and magnesium
With an NPK value of 2-1-9, SOLULYS® 145V offers a highly functional, sustainable alternative for formulators looking to improve crop resilience and performance naturally.
Supporting crops under nutrient stress
A greenhouse study conducted on tomato plants under potassium-deficient conditions demonstrated the value of SOLULYS® 145V in supporting crop performance. Plants received reduced potassium nutrition equivalent to only 40% of the recommended rate and were treated with different application levels of SOLULYS® 145V.
The results showed measurable improvements compared to untreated plants:
- Increased chlorophyll content, supporting healthier plant development
- More flower and fruit clusters per plant
- Higher total fruit weight
- Improved fruit set and progression toward ripening
Plants treated with the highest dosage showed particularly strong improvements in reproductive performance, even under nutrient stress conditions.
According to the study conclusions, treated plants produced more fruit clusters and achieved greater total fruit weight than untreated controls, highlighting the product’s ability to mitigate the negative impact of potassium deficiency.
Helping formulators create next-generation sustainable solutions
Today’s agricultural market is moving toward more sustainable, plant-based, and performance-driven solutions. Formulators are increasingly seeking ingredients that not only improve nutrient efficiency, but also align with environmental expectations and organic production systems.
SOLULYS® 145V helps answer these needs by combining:
- Plant-derived origin
- Ecocert certification
- Stress resistance
- Potassium-rich nutrition
- Support for soil and plant health
- Compatibility with sustainable agriculture programs
For formulators developing innovative crop nutrition products, SOLULYS® 145V offers a differentiated ingredient capable of supporting both plant resilience and yield performance under challenging growing conditions.
