Unlocking the Power of PVP and Crospovidone in Pharmaceutical Formulations: Introducing JH Nanhang Life Sciences' Product Range

Add to favourites
Excipients such as PVP and crospovidone play vital roles in ensuring that pharmaceutical formulations are effective, stable, and patient-friendly. They act as binders, disintegrants, and stabilisers, aiding in the delivery and release of APIs. The right choice of excipients can significantly impact the drug’s performance, making it crucial for pharmaceutical manufacturers to select excipients that guarantee consistency and reliability. JH Nanhang Life Sciences Co., Ltd. (JHNH) is a trusted global manufacturer specialising in the production of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and crospovidone (PVPP). Their wide range of excipients, including Povidone K 25, Povidone K 30, Povidone K 90, Crospovidone XL, Crospovidone XL-10, Crospovidone SL, and Copovidone VA64 is designed to meet the rigorous demands of modern pharmaceutical formulations.

Povidone (PVP): A Versatile Polymer for Diverse Applications

Povidone (PVP) is a water-soluble polymer that has become an essential excipient in the pharmaceutical industry. Its key functions include acting as a binder for wet granulation, a stabiliser for suspensions, and a film-former in coatings. Due to its non-ionic nature, formulators do not risk interactions with ionic APIs. It is a free-flowing powder with spherical particle morphology which ensures an easy handling in the formulation laboratory and production. JHNH offers three main grades of povidone each suited to different pharmaceutical applications. PVP K 25 and PVP K30 offer high adhesive properties at a relatively low viscosity, so formulators can expect great results at 3 – 7 % PVP in the formulation. PVP K 90 offers more adhesive strength at a higher viscosity, so formulators can even use a lower percentage of 1 – 3 %.

Each grade of povidone provides specific benefits depending on the formulation requirements, allowing manufacturers to fine-tune the excipient choice to meet desired therapeutic outcomes.

Crospovidone: The Gold Standard for Disintegration

In addition to their povidone offerings, JHNH provides a range of crospovidone (PVPP) products, which are cross-linked PVP polymers. Crospovidone is primarily used as a superdisintegrant—a critical excipient in formulations that ensures tablets and capsules break apart quickly, facilitating rapid drug release and absorption in the body. Crospovidone's effectiveness is essential for formulations where fast onset of action is required. PVPP offers a great disintegration performance at low percentages (1 – 4 %) and can be used in direct compression, dry granulation and wet granulation. It is non-ionic, so there is no risk of unexpected interactions with ionic APIs.
JHNH's range of crospovidone includes three grades, that differ in particle size to meet the versatile requirements of formulators

Crospovidone XL (EP)

Crospovidone Type A Ph. Eur
Crospovidone is a synthetic polyvinylpyrrolidone polymer obtained by polymerisation of vinyl vinylpyrrolidone. It is insoluble in water but swells due to pronounced capillary activity and hydration. The exact molecular weight of Crospovidone has not been established due to the material’s insolubility. Copovidone is official in all the major pharmacopoeia and is approved for use as an excipient and additive. Crospovidone from JH Nanhang is supplied as a creamy-white and is available in three grades of fineness: standard, fine and micronized. Features and Benefits Crospovidone XL has a particle size of 40 – 120 µm, corresponding to Type A in the Ph.Eur and BP Compatible with a broad range of APIs Generally regarded as non-toxic and non-irritant material. Accepted as a food additive in Europe. Listed in the FDA IIG database (oral and topical). High swelling capacity and hydration capacity Large particle sizes provide faster disintegration compared with small particles Applications Crospovidone is a water-insoluble tablet disintegrant (superdisintegrant) added to formulations at concentrations of between 2-5%.

Povidone K25 (PVP K25, EP)

Povidone Ph. Eur
Povidone is a synthetic linear polymer consisting 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone groups in different degrees of polymerisation and molecular weights. Each grade is characterized by its viscosity in aqueous solution, relative to that of water, expressed as a K – value, typically in the 10 – 120 range. Povidone occurs as a fine, white to creamy white coloured, odourless hygroscopic powder. Povidone with K- values equal to or lower than 30 are manufactured by spray–drying and occur as spheres. Povidones with >K 90 are manufactured by drum drying and occur as plates. Povidone is listed in the Ph.Eur, BP, JP and USP-NF. It is generally regarded as essentially non-toxic material. Features and Benefits Highly versatile excipient Non-irritant, pH stable and temperature resistant Hygroscopic and freely soluble in water and hydro-alcoholic solutions Povidone K25 has a molecular weight of approx. 30000 Applications Binder and dissolution rate enhancer in solid dosage forms (wet granulation and direct compression) Solubiliser, suspending and viscosity increasing agent in oral formulations (suspensions and solutions).
