GLP-1 and the future of food: how changing eating habits are reshaping ingredient expectations

Add to favourites

A new conversation around food, appetite and metabolic wellbeing

The primary purpose of GLP-1 medications was originally to treat type 2 diabetes by helping regulate blood sugar levels. They mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which stimulates insulin release and helps control glucose after meals.

The rise of GLP-1 medications (Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, etc.) is becoming one of the most important trends shaping the food industry. These drugs help reducing appetite leading to significant changes in eating habits and food purchases.
However, the relevance of this conversation reaches far beyond people using GLP-1-based medication. It is also influencing a much broader group of consumers interested in weight management, appetite control, balanced nutrition and long-term metabolic health. For many, the question is no longer simply how to eat less, but how to make food choices feel more effective, manageable and supportive of everyday wellbeing.

On average, GLP-1 users spent about 11% less on most categories of food and over half said they wanted to make even healthier food choices (PWC, 2024).
For food manufacturers, this is not about turning everyday foods into pharmaceutical-style products or making direct medical claims. The opportunity is broader and more relevant: understanding how changing eating habits are reshaping what consumers expect from meals, snacks and beverages.

People influenced by the GLP-1 conversation are not simply looking for fewer calories. They are rethinking what they eat, what they avoid, what they drink and which ingredients they trust. Smaller appetites, missed meals, digestive discomfort, lower energy and concerns around nutrient intake are creating new expectations for food and drink products.

This marks a shift away from traditional weight management logic. Instead of focusing only on what is removed – less sugar, fewer calories or reduced fat – the next phase of food innovation will be about what products can actively deliver: more nutrition per portion, better satiety, easier digestion, sustained energy and enjoyable eating experiences in smaller, more manageable formats.

Five need-spaces shaping product expectations

The GLP-1 conversation is not one single trend. It is a cluster of changing needs that cuts across meals, snacks, beverages and supplements. These needs create a useful framework for understanding which ingredients consumers are likely to seek out – and which they may start to avoid.

Hydration

Consumers are paying more attention to fluid intake and electrolyte balance. This creates opportunities for products that support hydration in convenient, enjoyable formats, from beverages and soups to broths and light meal concepts.

Digestive comfort

Constipation, bloating, nausea and slow digestion are recurring concerns. Ingredients and formats that feel gentle, gut-friendly and easy to tolerate can become more relevant

Energy

Lower calorie intake, smaller meals and reduced coffee consumption can contribute to fatigue. Consumers still need energy, but they may look for options that feel less aggressive than high-sugar or high-caffeine products.

Nutritional benefits

Reduced food intake can make protein, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients more important. Products that deliver meaningful nutrition per portion are likely to gain relevance.
20% of US GLP-1 users were diagnosed with nutritional deficiencies within the first year of treatment (Mintel, 2026)

Smaller portions

Reduced appetite creates demand for portion-controlled and nutrient-dense products. The challenge is to avoid making smaller portions feel like less value. Products need to feel purposeful, satisfying and complete.
Together, these need-spaces show why ingredient strategy matters. Format innovation is important, but the real question is what sits inside the format.
