Improve adhesive performance with DEGALAN® acrylic resins

- Molecular weight: Influences cohesive strength and mechanical durability; higher molecular weight leads to tougher adhesive films.
- Viscosity behaviour: Affects processing, coating application, and film formation.
- Functional groups (acid and hydroxyl values): Enable enhanced adhesion to polar substrates and improved crosslinking potential for higher final strength and chemical resistance.
This tunability allows formulators to design adhesives that meet specific requirements, from flexibility and peel strength to heat resistance and chemical durability.
Product versatility: DEGALAN® acrylic portfolio
Within solvent-borne acrylic systems, DEGALAN® grades such as AD 952, AD 908, and LP 50/09 provide a broad property spectrum. For example, lower Tg grades deliver flexibility and tack, while higher Tg or higher molecular weight grades offer hardness, cohesion, and thermal resistance.
This range enables formulators to optimise performance across applications by adjusting polymer blends rather than redesigning entire systems.
Heat sealing applications
Heat sealing remains a primary application for methacrylate binders, particularly in packaging for food, pharmaceutical, and consumer goods. In these systems, DEGALAN® resins function as film-forming binders in heat-sealable coatings.

- Reliable sealing performance across substrates such as aluminium, PET, PP, PS, and paper
- Controlled peelability, enabling “easy-open” features without compromising seal integrity

A typical formulation combines 20–30% methacrylate resin with PVC copolymers, plasticisers, additives, and solvent systems such as ethyl acetate or MEK. This structure delivers balanced adhesion, flexibility, and processability.
Reactive hotmelt adhesives
In reactive polyurethane (PU) hotmelts, methacrylate resins serve as tackifiers and performance modifiers. These systems combine thermoplastic behaviour during application with chemical curing after cooling, forming a crosslinked network.

Cyanoacrylate (superglue) systems
In cyanoacrylate adhesives, methacrylate resins act as rheology modifiers and performance additives, enhancing control over viscosity and application behaviour.
These systems are characterised by:
- Extremely fast curing, triggered by ambient moisture
- High bond strength across metals, plastics, rubber, and ceramics
- Thin bond lines, enabling precision applications
- Good chemical resistance after curing
By integrating methacrylate-based components, formulators can improve handling, reduce brittleness, and adapt adhesives to specific application needs.
