Laundry liquicaps are one of the fastest-growing formats in the detergents market, driven by consumer demand for convenience, precise dosing, and premium performance. Their compact format, ease of use, and reduced packaging footprint position them strongly against traditional liquid and powder detergents.
However, behind this simplicity sits a highly complex formulation challenge. Unlike conventional liquids, liquicaps must deliver concentrated performance in a low-water system, while remaining stable inside a water-sensitive PVA film. This creates a unique balance between efficacy, stability, and compatibility that requires a different approach to ingredient selection.
Drawing on recent work from our Homecare lab, this article outlines key formulation strategies and ingredient choices to help develop robust, high-performing liquicap systems.
1. The critical role of water control
These formulations need to be very low in water content to protect the PVA film from dissolving, requiring careful selection of raw materials and solvent systems to maintain stability.
This constraint fundamentally shifts formulation strategy - water is no longer the primary solvent, and must instead be replaced with multifunctional alternatives.
