Acetylsalicylic acid, also known as aspirin or 2 acetoxybenzoic acid, is an analgesic-antipyretic medicine made by salicylic acid interacting with acetic anhydride. It is a white crystalline powder, odourless, stable in dry air. It is slightly soluble in water but soluble in ethanol and sodium hydroxide solution. Acetylsalicylic acid has antipyretic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatism effects. Therapeutically, it is often used for fever, headache, muscle pain, neuralgia, rheumatic fever, acute rheumatic arthritis, and management. It also has antiplatelet aggregation effects, hence the reason for its use in preventing arterial thrombosis, atherosclerosis, transient cerebral ischemia and myocardial infarction.
