Request a documentCrospovidone is a synthetic polyvinylpyrrolidone polymer obtained by polymerisation of vinyl vinylpyrrolidone. It is insoluble in water but swells due to pronounced capillary activity and hydration. The exact molecular weight of Crospovidone has not been established due to the material’s insolubility.
Copovidone is official in all the major pharmacopoeia and is approved for use as an excipient and additive. Crospovidone from JH Nanhang is supplied as a creamy-white and is available in three grades of fineness: standard, fine and micronized.
Features and Benefits
Crospovidone SL has a particle size of less than 20 µm, corresponding to Type B in the Ph.Eur
Compatible with a broad range of APIs
Generally regarded as non-toxic and non-irritant material. Accepted as a food additive in Europe. Listed in the FDA IIG database (oral and topical).
High swelling capacity and hydration capacity
Micronized particle sizes well-suited for intragranular addition for fast disintegration compared with non-micronized grades.
Applications
Crospovidone is a water-insoluble tablet disintegrant (superdisintegrant) added to formulations at concentrations of between 2-5%.
