Povidone is a synthetic linear polymer consisting 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone groups in different degrees of polymerisation and molecular weights. Each grade is characterized by its viscosity in aqueous solution, relative to that of water, expressed as a K – value, typically in the 10 – 120 range.
Povidone occurs as a fine, white to creamy white coloured, odourless hygroscopic powder. Povidone with K- values equal to or lower than 30 are manufactured by spray–drying and occur as spheres. Povidones with >K 90 are manufactured by drum drying and occur as plates.
Povidone is listed in the Ph.Eur, BP, JP and USP-NF. It is generally regarded as essentially non-toxic material.
