As the chemical industry looks toward safer and more sustainable production, the term “green solvent” has become increasingly important, but what exactly is a green solvent?
A green solvent generally refers to a solvent designed to reduce toxicity, improved biodegradability, and lower environmental impact while still delivering the technical performance required in manufacturing (Tânia Moniz and Mafalda Sarraguça, 2026). These solvents are typically characterised by a lower hazard profile, reduced emissions, and in many cases, the use of renewable or bio‑derived resources, setting them apart from conventional petrochemical‑based solvents.
