Resilience against time: Biological longevity

Add to favorites
1_kigwzi
For a long time, anti-ageing in personal care focused on correcting visible signs of ageing, such as wrinkles, loss of firmness, and uneven tone, largely at the surface level.

In 2026, this approach is expanding to include a deeper focus on preserving the skin’s health. In this context, resilience against time is characterised by the capability for solutions to support the skin in withstanding cumulative biological stress over time.

From correction to longevity

Rather than fixing damage once it appears, longevity-led beauty aims to maintain the skin’s innate ability to repair, regenerate, and remain resilient as it ages. This shift reflects rising health literacy and greater exposure to dermatology-led education, where long-term tissue health is prioritised over short-term cosmetic change.

At the core of this evolution is cellular signalling — the biological communication network that allows skin cells to sense stress, coordinate repair, and regulate regeneration. Ageing, inflammation, and environmental exposure disrupt these signals, weakening the skin’s ability to recover efficiently.

Longevity-focused formulations move beyond barrier repair to restore the "biological dialogue" between cells, influencing how skin cells communicate, respond to stress, and initiate repair processes. This includes supporting fibroblast activity, modulating inflammatory cascades, sustaining cellular energy pathways, and activating autophagy - the skin’s natural “self-cleaning” process that removes damaged cellular components and supports cellular renewal.

From clinics to home

Many of the technologies driving this trend originate in regenerative dermatology and aesthetic medicine, where they were historically delivered through professional-only interventions such as injectables and in-clinic procedures.

In 2026, these biological concepts are increasingly translated into topical, repeat-use personal care formats, allowing regenerative support to become part of everyday routines. Ingredients such as PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide), exosome-inspired actives, polyphenols and peptides exemplify this shift, all of which are connected by their roles in cellular signalling.

How cellular signalling ingredients are reshaping longevity

PDRN supports skin recovery by activating cellular repair pathways. By interacting with adenosine receptors on skin cells, PDRN sends biological signals that stimulate fibroblast activity, enhance tissue repair, and help regulate inflammation, effectively switching on the skin’s natural recovery mechanisms. Once limited to injectable aesthetics, PDRN is now widely used in topical serums, masks, scalp treatments, and hybrid formats.

The global PDRN market size was valued at approximately USD 53.17 million in 2025 and is projected to reach approximately USD 76.04 million in 20261.

At the same time, the number of APAC personal care product launches with PDRN has also increased 31-fold between 2023 and 2025. (from 7 to 216)2.

Exosome-inspired technologies are following a similar trajectory. Exosomes are nano-vesicles that serve as sophisticated delivery systems for complex biological instructions. 3 They carry proteins, lipids, peptides, and genetic material that instruct recipient cells on how to repair, regenerate, and optimise their microenvironment. In longevity-led beauty, exosomes act as intercellular messengers , coordinating multiple repair signals simultaneously rather than targeting a single pathway.

In 2026, exosomes are expected to evolve into the "new retinol", facilitating intercellular communication to repair damage at a systemic, biological level. 4

The exosome market for cosmetic applications is rapidly expanding, with a global market value of about USD 1.8 billion in 2024 and projections to reach USD 26.6 billion by 2035 5. The number of personal care product launches featuring exosomes has also increased by 38 times between 2023 and 2025. (from 4 to 152) 6

Polyphenols play a complementary role within this signalling ecosystem by supporting the skin’s ability to adapt to cumulative biological stress. Widely studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, polyphenols are increasingly recognised for their involvement in modulating cellular signalling networks relevant to ageing and cellular resilience .7 By modulating oxidative stress and supporting cellular homeostasis, polyphenols help maintain efficient signalling environments, creating favourable conditions for repair, regeneration, and autophagy-related maintenance processes.

Peptides support this signalling ecosystem by providing targeted biological cues. These short amino acid chains mimic naturally occurring protein fragments, allowing them to bind to specific receptors on skin cells—particularly fibroblasts—and trigger defined responses such as collagen synthesis, wrinkle relaxation, or barrier reinforcement.

In APAC, product launches containing Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 and Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 have grown by 218% and 162%8 respectively over the past three years, highlighting the growing demand for biologically precise, signal-driven performance.

Together, these ingredients signal a move away from single-pathway anti-ageing toward multifaceted cellular resilience. Rather than simply correcting visible damage, they restore and reinforce the skin’s internal communication systems, helping it adapt, repair, and function over time.

Opportunities for personal care manufacturers

  • Formulate signalling-led longevity systems : Move beyond single-hero actives by designing multi-ingredient systems that support cellular communication and repair.
  • Extend longevity concepts beyond facial skin care into scalp , hair, sun, and body care, where cumulative biological stress also manifests.
  • Frame claims around mechanisms of action , i.e., how ingredients support cellular repair and resilience rather than cosmetic outcomes.
  • Optimise delivery and efficacy through formulation design
Cellular signalling ingredients require careful formulation to perform effectively. Azelis provides formulation know-how to optimise delivery systems, bioavailability, and ingredient synergy, ensuring that signalling cues remain active and effective throughout the product lifecycle.
