Transforming micronutrient delivery and agricultural outcomes
For years, plantations across Sarawak applied thousands of tons of zinc and copper to peat soils to correct deficiencies and support crop growth, yet yields remained stagnant. Despite consistent fertilisation practices, micronutrient deficiencies persisted, creating a costly cycle of input without impact.
The issue was not the quantity of nutrients applied, but their availability to the plant.
Recognising this gap, the Azelis Malaysia team partnered closely with our principal and customer to challenge conventional approaches and introduce a solution specifically designed for peat soil conditions.
Rethinking nutrient availability
Peat soils present a unique agronomic challenge. High organic matter and complex soil chemistry can immobilise micronutrients, preventing them from reaching the root zone where they are needed most.
Instead of increasing application rates, the team focused on improving nutrient efficiency by introducing an EDTA-chelated micronutrient solution that stabilised micronutrients within a protected molecular complex, shielding zinc and copper from adverse soil interactions. This ensures that nutrients remain bioavailable and can be effectively absorbed by crops.

The result is a shift from volume-based fertilisation to performance-driven nutrient delivery, reducing wastage, lowering environmental impact, and enhancing overall effectiveness.
Overcoming technical and operational barriers
The journey was not without its challenges. The customer, a Malaysian provider of agricultural inputs and services, had long relied on multiple suppliers, resulting in inconsistent product performance and limited clarity on nutrient effectiveness.
To address this, the Azelis Malaysia team worked closely with the customer to address micronutrient management. Through continuous engagement, on-site discussions, and hands-on support, the team demonstrated the value of nutrient efficiency using field trials and technical validation. Site assessments and pilot programs were jointly conducted, building confidence and differentiating the solution from conventional practices.
From pilot to adoption
The project progressed through close collaboration and continuous knowledge sharing, ensuring solutions were aligned with the customer's operational needs:
- Pilot preparation and principal alignment established a strong technical and operational foundation
- Joint field trials and site evaluations enabled real-world validation and strengthened customer trust
- Coordinated supply execution and targeted training ensured smooth implementation and long-term adoption
What began as a technical challenge evolved into a trusted, long-term partnership through continuous collaboration, alignment, and shared commitment to achieving results.
Delivering measurable impact
The introduction of the solution marked a turning point in the customer's approach to micronutrient management.
- Persistent zinc and copper deficiencies were addressed more effectively
- Oil palms yield potential is improved through enhanced nutrient uptake
- Application rates were optimised, reducing input waste
- The customer strengthened its market position as a forward-thinking solutions provider
