Multi-dimensional wellness shapes everyday better-for-you foods in 2026

Add to favourites
As consumers are becoming more discerning, more informed, and more intentional about what they eat and drink, wellness in 2026 is no longer defined by a single functional claim or hero ingredient, but instead, everyday products are increasingly expected to support multiple aspects of wellbeing through value-added nutrition.
Functional claims such as gut or immune support now sit alongside broader expectations around improved nutritional profiles, shaping product choices beyond isolated health promises.
This shift reflects a move away from reactive health solutions toward proactive, everyday nutrition. Rather than “fixing” a problem when it appears, consumers are integrating nutritional and functional support into daily routines through beverages, snacks, staples, and familiar formats that fit seamlessly into life.

From single claims to stacked benefits

At the core of this trend is a fundamental change in how a better-for-you or functional formulation is approached. For instance, protein is no longer enough on its own. Fibre is also no longer just about digestion. Today’s winning products combine multiple functional components – proteins, fibres, minerals, and other nutrients – into cohesive systems designed to deliver more than one measurable outcome.
This is clearly reflected in market activity. New food and beverage launches featuring protein paired with at least one additional health claim have grown 32% year-on-year, signalling a decisive shift away from single-nutrient positioning toward multi-benefit propositions. For manufacturers, this raises the bar: nutritional claims must work together, instead of being chosen selectively, and deliver value consumers can easily understand and feel.

Gut health as the foundation of holistic wellbeing

Gut health has also gradually but firmly moved from a niche topic into the mainstream, but its role now extends far beyond digestion. 59% of consumers say gut health is very important for whole-body health, reinforcing fibres and digestive solutions as foundational building blocks in modern formulations.
More importantly, consumers are making the connection between digestive health and broader benefits. 44% report noticing improvements beyond digestion, such as energy, skin, or immunity, when improving gut health. This perception positions gut-focused ingredients as enablers of multi-dimensional wellness rather than standalone features, opening the door for more holistic storytelling and smarter formulation strategies.

Protein and Fibre-enriched Snack Bar

AZE-AU-FH-82
Challenge Today’s health-conscious consumers are looking for convenient options that deliver real nutritional benefits, such as added protein and fibre, without compromising on flavour or texture. Yet, many high-protein or fibre-enriched bars on the market often feel dry, chalky, or overly dense, which reduces enjoyment. Clean label expectations add another layer of complexity, with consumers preferring natural sweeteners and clear, simple ingredient lists they can trust. Azelis's solution We have developed a Protein and Fibre Snack Bar that combines up to 5 grams of protein and 8 grams of fibre per serving with a satisfying chewy texture. By using Proatein® oat protein, a plant-based source that supports muscle maintenance and satiety, Fossence® P95 soluble fibre, which promotes digestive health and gut balance, and Creavitalis® creatine, known to enhance physical performance, the formulation delivers multifunctional nutrition in every bite. For stability and sensory quality, X-tra Guard™ natural preservation ensures lasting freshness, while NutraSweetM™ Natural provides a clean, sugar-like sweetness with minimal calories. The result is a snack bar with an improved nutritional profile, a soft and chewy texture, and a balanced sweetness that makes healthier snacking enjoyable. Hero ingredients Proatein® Oat Protein: A high-quality plant protein source that boosts protein content while delivering a clean taste and supporting sustainable nutrition trends. Fossence® P95: A soluble prebiotic fibre that enhances digestive wellness, supports gut health, and provides mild sweetness. Creavitalis® Creatine: A premium creatine fortification that improves muscle performance, energy metabolism, and cognitive function, achieving active lifestyle demands.

Classic Vanilla Soft Serve Ice Cream

AZE-AU-FH-62
Better-for-you indulgence is the new snacking. We want to enjoy, but we also want our health to thrive, and consumers are expecting this to become the new industry standard. Take the lead with our special soft serve ice cream. Soft-serve ice creams require specific ingredients and a precise manufacturing process to ensure a soft and spoonable texture. This involves incorporating the right amount of air into the formulation, managing the meltdown rate to enjoy the thick and creamy texture longer, and preventing ice crystal formation to maintain a smooth consistency. Consumers are also expecting a burst of flavor and sweetness when enjoying this desserts, even in health improved recipes. Hence, adjusting the flavor and sweetness is crucial to deliver a satisfying yet health-conscious treat. Our team has successfully developed a soft-serve ice cream using NUTRAVA© Citrus Fiber. This label-friendly ingredient not only achieves comparable overrun, sensory profile, and texture consistency as traditional texturizers but also enhances creaminess and prevents early crystallization and melt-down. The best part? You can seamlessly incorporate citrus fiber into your ice cream production without any process changes. We have also made this indulgence healthier by reducing sugar content by 25%* and enriching the ice cream with a soluble prebiotic fiber for natural sweetness and gut health support. This results in a naturally enhanced, creamy, and better-for-you ice cream with rich vanilla flavors, contributing to the well-being of your consumers. Key ingredients: NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber peak: A label-friendly citrus fiber that enhances and stabilizes emulsions, improving ice cream by delaying melt time and preventing water crystallization. It also maintains consistent overrun, matching standard texturizer blends, while replacing up to four common industry additives—simplifying your ingredient list for a cleaner label. Fossence: A high-quality prebiotic dietary fiber derived from non-GMO sugarcane. Rich in fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), it promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, enhancing digestive health. Easily soluble and neutral in taste,  Vanilla flavour: A fragrant, sweet, and creamy vanilla flavor, delivering the classic, rich vanilla notes that elevate soft serve ice cream to a new level of delightful smoothness and warmth.

Everyday health, built into familiar formats

Another defining characteristic of this trend is accessibility. Multi-dimensional wellness is no longer reserved for supplements or specialist products, but it is increasingly embedded into everyday foods and beverages. Consumers want functional support without disruption, familiar tastes, recognisable formats, and benefits that fit naturally into daily habits across different life stages.
For manufacturers, this means designing fortified systems with intent: balancing nutrition, sensory performance, and clarity of purpose. Therefore, the challenge is no longer whether functionality can be added, but how it can be integrated seamlessly while maintaining taste, texture, and consumer trust.

Low Sugar Fibre-enriched Chocolate Chip Cookie

AZE-AU-FH-80
Challenge Chocolate chip cookies are a global favourite, but today’s health-conscious consumers are raising the bar, expecting familiar treats to align with trends like sugar reduction, added nutrition or even functional benefits. Reduced-sugar formulations often risk leaving a lingering aftertaste, dryness, or loss of mouthfeel, while adding fibre can affect dough handling and bake stability. Azelis’s solution We have developed a reduced-sugar, high-fibre chocolate chip cookie that delivers indulgence without compromise. By combining NutraSweet™ Natural for clean, natural sweetness with prebiotic fibre, the cookie achieves a healthy range of under 1.5 g sugar per serving and a boost of gut-friendly fibre. The prebiotic fibre, Fossence® P95 also adds to achieving a chocolate cookie that also supports and improves gut health at the same time, without sacrificing the overall quality, taste and texture of a classic chocolate chip cookie. Hero ingredients NutraSweetM™ Natural: A plant-based sweetener delivering clean sweetness without calories or sugar spikes, ensuring reduced sugar with no compromise on taste. Fossence® P95: A soluble prebiotic dietary fiber that supports gut health, provides mild sweetness, and contributes to dough moisture retention.

What this means for innovation

Multi-dimensional wellness sets a clear direction for 2026: products are expected to deliver more nutritional value per product, without sacrificing sensory quality. Successful innovation will focus on purpose-built nutrition systems, where better-for-you reformulation, functional fortification, and everyday health integration work together to deliver tangible value.
However, delivering value-added nutrition introduces formulation complexity. Stacking proteins, fibres, minerals, and bioactives can affect solubility, stability, texture, flavour, and nutrient availability. At the same time, reducing sugar, fat, or sodium in applications such as beverages, dairy, bakery, or sauces often alters body, mouthfeel, sweetness perception, and overall sensory balance, requiring careful reformulation to restore performance and consumer acceptance.
Additionally, as front-of-pack labelling and nutrient profiling frameworks, such as Nutri-Score, continue to evolve across APAC and Europe, brands face increasing pressure to ensure that nutritional improvements and functional claims are clear, transparent, and meaningful to consumers.
In this landscape, functionality is no longer a feature, but a framework. For manufacturers, multi-dimensional wellness calls for a more intentional approach to innovation, including:
  • Formulating around broader wellbeing goals across life stages: Designing nutrition systems that address multiple needs beyond single nutrients or claims.
  • Reframing positioning to support stacked, complementary benefits: Aligning functional claims and nutritional improvements into clear, credible product stories.
  • Embedding functionality into everyday food and beverage formats: Delivering benefits through familiar formats that fit naturally into daily routines.
Taken together, these principles reinforce a shift toward purpose-driven formulation, where better-for-you products deliver benefits consumers can trust and feel, every day.
